Ante Trstenjak
Ante Trstenjak, Homestead, oil on cardboard, signed lower right, framed. Dimensions: 63.5 x 48.5 cm (+ frame 9 cm).
Trstenjak (1894 - 1970) painted landscapes (Slovenske gorice, Paris, Dalmatia, Lusatia, Prague, Istria) in a post-impressionist, tonally attuned style, Lusatian folklore motifs and still lifes. He is considered one of the best Slovenian watercolorists in the period between the two wars, and the motifs from Slovenske gorice are particularly experienced.
After attending the School of Arts and Crafts in Graz and Vienna, he began studying painting in Zagreb, graduating in 1923 in Prague (prof. V. Hynais, F. Thiele). He furthered his professional skills in Italy and Paris, where he also exhibited independently. In 1928, he first visited Lusatia in Germany and began creating works with Lusatian-Serbian folklore themes. From 1932 to 1950 he lived in Prague, where he married in 1933. During World War II he worked underground and was interned. In 1950 he moved to Maribor, where he remained until his death.
