Ivan Generalić (December 21, 1914 Hlebine - November 27, 1992 Koprivnica): the initiator and most prominent representative of Croatian naive art. He is known for his highly stylized, vivid and almost hallucinatory landscapes of rural farm life, which he combined with incisive political commentary. Generalič created his works using a unique process of applying oil paint to the back of a glass plate, creating a shimmering, screen-like quality to the final paintings.
He exhibited independently in Paris, New York and Brussels and participated in many group exhibitions, such as Baden-Baden, Basel, Bratislava, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, St. Petersburg, Madrid, etc. He participated in the biennial in Sao Paulo, where the international affirmation of Croatian naive art began.
