Small baroque chest of drawers
Small chest of drawers, made in the second half of the 18th century (circa 1780), in the Baroque style. The piece is veneered in walnut and decorated with marquetry featuring floral motifs (also on the top and sides).
The chest has a slightly convex (bombé) front, characteristic of European furniture of the period. This undulating line lends the piece softness and represents one of the key design features of the 18th century. The handles are made of brass. The chest stands on slender, elegantly curved legs (cabriole legs), ending in a subtly carved lower apron. This element gives the piece lightness and refinement.
The chest combines functionality (storage) with a representative character – such pieces were important decorative elements in 18th-century interiors, often placed in salons as a statement of prestige.
The chest has been restored in our workshop using traditional techniques. The surface is hand-polished with shellac (French polish), enhancing the wood grain and giving it a characteristic high gloss.
Dimensions: 66 × 39.5 × 76 (h) cm.
