Rex chairs by Niko Kralj
2 x Rex dining chairs and 6 x Rex lounge chairs, beautifully preserved.
The story of the Rex chair began in the 1950s with the Rex folding chair. Its design combines innovation, functionality and beauty. Niko Kralj managed to develop the most comfortable chair of its kind, expanding the boundaries of bent plywood and reducing the use of materials, while maintaining the emphasis on aesthetics. This is how an indispensable series of furniture was created that has stood the test of time: the Rex collection (https://rex-kralj.com/sl/kolekcija/rex/)
The Rex chair (also part of the Rex Kralj collection) is one of the most famous products of Slovenian industrial design. It was designed and conceived in 1952 by architect and designer Niko Kralj, who was the head of the Chair's development department at the time. Prof. Kralj is considered one of the world's industrial design legends, along with Charles and Ray Eames and Alvar Aalto.
Rex was the first chair in Slovenia designed for mass production, made using pressed, perforated plywood technology. It has become an example of an ergonomically and functionally flawless product, and a cult item for design-conscious individuals around the world. To date, more than 2 million chairs have been produced. The Rex chair is included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art MOMA in New York, the Danish Design Museum (Designmuseum Danmark) and the Museumsquartier in Vienna. According to the selection of the newspaper Finance in 1999, the Rex chair took 2nd place as a Slovenian product of the 20th century. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its development, an exhibition was held in the Moderna galerija in Ljubljana, which was on display from 26 October to 28 November 2004.
