French writing desk – secretary (bureau à cylindre)
A sophisticated French writing desk (bureau à cylindre), from the second half of the 19th century. The writing desk combines superb craftsmanship, artistic decoration and functionality. Such pieces of furniture have always been a symbol of prestige.
Design and construction: elegantly curved, slender legs (so-called cabriole), which give the piece a lightness, softly rounded lines without sharp edges, the cover of the writing surface is slightly convex and opens downwards.
Materials and technique: the surface is covered with rich veneer (walnut and exotic woods), there is a pronounced marquetry pattern - a woven motif on the entire surface, in the middle there is a decorative medallion with floral ornaments and a basket motif. The writing surface is covered with natural leather.
Decorative elements: gilded bronze ornaments (ormolu) on the corners, legs and lock, asymmetrical floral motifs (typical of the Rococo aesthetic), high gloss varnish emphasizes the depth of the wood and the details of the marquetry.
Dimensions: 75 x 46 x 100 (h) cm.
The writing desk has been restored in our restoration workshop. The surface has been hand-polished with shellac (shellac - a natural resin applied by hand in several layers, which gives the furniture its characteristic deep, warm shine)
